This week we begin our journey into the Season of Lent, as we seek to experience the companionship of Jesus with us as we tend to our own 40 days set apart in preparation for the feast of Easter. We follow Jesus in this season on the way toward the cross in order to make ourselves ready for the way of the Lord in the places we are called to be and serve.
We read this Sunday, of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness from the gospel of Matthew 4. Throughout scripture, both the wilderness and the number 40 represents a place and time of preparation, a season of waiting for God’s next move, of learning to trust in God’s mercy and presence. For forty days and nights, Jesus remains in the wilderness, getting ready for what comes next.
