"and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." - Acts 1:8
In this scripture, Jesus commissions His disciples to work in service to what they would have understood as the main Church body (Jerusalem), local area missions (their home area of Judea), distant missions that would be out of their comfort zone (the culturally different land of Samaria) and international missions (the ends of the earth). Our youth ministry is similarly committed to reaching out to our world in these four ways.
Look below to find out how we do it and how you can get involved!
Our youth serve our local Church in a variety of ways from ushering, leading worship, helping out with the Wake Interfatih Hospitality network, and most importantly by praying for and ministering to each other. Come to our weekly youth fellowship meetings or join one of our worship leading ministries like youth choir or puppets to see this ministry in action.
Some of the ways we are active in our local community are: The Unselfish Beggars project every Halloween where we trick or treat for canned goods and clothing to give to the needy. The Crop Walk every fall where we walk to raise money and awareness for hunger. Our Senior high small group ministry also does service projects like the NC Food Bank and visiting area nursing homes.
Rural Appalachia may be just as culturally distant to us in Cary as Samaria was to the early Christian Church. Every summer we send youth and adults there to repair homes and hearts. What we find is that we are the ones who are in need of fixing. It is our hearts that are broken and healed by encountering God through his land and his people. Sign-ups for the Appalachia Service Project are held in October.
As members of the United Methodist Church we are involved in global missions through the united Methodist Commission on Relief (UMCOR) and through our partnership with World Vision, the largest Christian relief agency in the world, we are able to impact many parts of our world that we will probably never see and help hundreds of children who we will never meet. We sponsor two children through World Vision and participate in the 30 hour Famine. The 30 Hour Famine is and annual fast to raise money and awareness for world hunger. Each spring 50+ White Plains youth join with thousands of other youth around the country and the world to participate in this fast. Over the years we have raised thousands of dollars which has gone to aid children fighting to survive poverty and starvation overseas.
