Confirmation at White Plains UMC
May 27th will be devoted to our 2012 Confirmation class. The word confirmation literally means “with firm-ness” (con = “with”-- 'firm-ation” = firm-ness). Confirmation means to make firm or solid what has gone before – what parents, families, church, and God have done so far in the lives of our youth. The “before” refers perhaps to baptism and, in a broader sense, to all our faith journey up to this point. Confirmation is about the gift God gives through belief in Jesus Christ and through baptism and the choice to believe in that gift for one’s self.
Confirmation Sunday is on the Day of Pentecost; the day we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. Remember the congregational part in the Confirmation Vows---
As people whom the Lord our God has called we give thanks and praise to God for the gift of the Spirit, and we offer our own promise to this confirmation class. As we remember our own vows of membership and professions of faith, we can set an example of devotion, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. Our example helps these youth remain faithful to the promises they have made. When we profess our faith every day in any way, God's Spirit---through the church---confirms us in the faith.
